What to wear at the Varanasi ghats: a simple guide

The short answer
Wear light, breathable clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. You will walk on stone steps, stand in crowds and sit near the river, so comfort matters more than anything else.
For a sunrise boat ride
Mornings by the river can feel cool, especially in winter. A heavyweight tee with a light hoodie or shirt on top is easy to layer and easy to remove once the sun is up. Slip-on shoes are handy, because many people leave their footwear in the boat or at the steps.
For the evening Ganga aarti
The aarti draws large crowds near the ghats in the evening. Wear something you do not mind sitting in, and keep your bag small and zipped. Cotton dries quickly and stays comfortable in the heat of a crowd.
For temples
Many temples expect modest dress. Covering shoulders and knees is a respectful choice. Check the rules posted at each entrance, as they can differ from one temple to the next.
Fabric tips
- Cotton is breathable and works across seasons.
- Darker colours hide dust and the occasional splash.
- Avoid very delicate fabrics near the water.
Seasons in Varanasi
Summers are hot, winters are cool in the mornings and evenings, and the monsoon brings rain. Pack for the season you are travelling in and check the forecast before you go.
